Blind Date is a 1984 sci-fi horror film about a man who is blind but can use new eye technology to track down a serial killer.

Produced and directed by Niko Mastorakis (Into the Cold Night; Nightmare at Noon; The Wind; Death Island) to a script he co-wrote with Fred K. Perry. The film stars Joseph Bottoms, Kirstie Alley, James Daughton, Lana Clarkson and Keir Dulla.

Plot:

Arrogant publicist Jonathon Ratcliffe (Joseph Bottoms) is stricken with sudden blindness and is frustrated when doctors discover there is nothing wrong with him. With the help of his girlfriend (Kirsty Alley), he consults a renowned ophthalmologist who equips him with an experimental device that allows him to see through a computer interface and brain electrodes.

Meanwhile, the taxi driver brings the young women to their apartment, calms them down and gives them a little amateur deadly surgery. Their paths inevitably cross when a serial killer starts stabbing too close to home. …..

It’s certainly fun to see a blind date indulge in CompuVision, which allows the protagonist to fight bullies with a lead stick and expand his memory (another idea vaguely described in the text). The murder scenes are less appealing and, although Mastorakis uses Argento’s colors and adapts the style, the film becomes repetitive with many scenes involving a scalpel-wielding monster moaning at women….. …a film littered with meaningless dialogue. The story is so crazy that it can temporarily blind the viewer. Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews

Rather, it’s a cheese that drifts from strong atmosphere to less effective budget constraints […] Blind Date is no slasher-like masterpiece of an artificial genre – but I’d say it’s in the upper half. It’s fun to see Deanna Troy (Marina Sirtis) appear as a council member, Keir Dulla with wavy hair, and a cantankerous Kirstie Alley. Bever DVD

…I never feel any tension; even though I know intellectually what I’m supposed to feel in certain scenes, I never really feel it, and that’s at least partly because I don’t like or dislike the main character. It also doesn’t help that the storyline is rather contrived at times and the climax doesn’t work for me. Fantastic music movies and trolls

It’s not really a bad thriller, but ultimately it’s a gimmick, and I think it’s no great loss that we never got the sequel that was promised in the credits….. Rivets on the poster

…. would benefit from a few tempo changes, a bit of pulling on a handful of dull dialogue moments, and a pruning on a few passages that come close to Shaggy Dog territory […] the real meat of the film – the gentle T&A cuts, the bursts of violence, the general air of pomposity and spectacle – is delivered with a familiar panache for the director. It’s a little far-fetched, but you get the point. Niko Mastorakis is a jack-of-all-trades and a jack-of-all-trades. He’s skilled at photography, directing, writing, but none of it is more than the sum of its parts. The result is entertaining, but redundant as a culture. It’s like watching three movies in one.
