…too thin in its plot, too subtle in its characterizations, to be considered a truly great film […] But for the ten-year-old in all of us, it’s entertainment of the highest order. Cinephantastica, 2009.
In the first half, if there was no mass destruction, we might see a Japanese James Bond movie with aliens playing S.P.E.C.T.R.E. Those expecting an uninterrupted, Godzilla-like shuffle in Tokyo may be disappointed, as the sensational title is misleading. Rotate the image
The effects are weak (hard to believe this is the same year as 2001), but Honda is sometimes ambitious with effects. It doesn’t look like much, but it’s fun. Unfortunately, these moments are distant and rare. The film is only eighty minutes long, but it is very long. Stop button
The tension is effective and the plot explores uncharted territory, still connected to the previous mythology […] This sequel is action-packed, well-shot, has an even pace and is written with a childlike smile. Aside from the occasional refill, you get more here than you’re used to. Tales of Terror
The first two-thirds of the film is largely a combination of spy plot and space opera, surprisingly funny and curiously entertaining in its own way. The film derails at every turn in the most glorious way. The final epic battle involves all the monsters of Toho. Teenage Frankenstein
…the reason we’re here, monster. Unfortunately, we have to put up with minutes of dull plot and below-average acting. Our hero Katsuo is a good guy, but he’s missing something…… Other people are unintentionally funny […] Maybe it’s Dab’s fault, but one day you’ll faint when you hear the right word so many times. Toho Kingdom
…If anything, this is one of the better Godzilla films, with higher production values than its immediate predecessors. Most of the series’ original creative team is back, including director Ishiro Honda and composer Akira Ifukube, who provides a rousing score. The downside is the usual bad voice acting and logic errors. …. TV Guide
…The script is poor, and as usual the juvenile-comic screenplay […] is almost worth enduring the banality of the final confrontation on Mount Fuji BFI Monthly Film Bulletin, 1969.
…The plot is comic book-level, the special effects depend on obvious trivia, and the (human) acting is from the Flash Gordon school Variety, 23. May, 1969.
