Happy New Year to everyone, hoping it will be better than the last one. Let’s start in 2021 with the Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer, and it has a character that makes only a fleeting appearance at the beginning of the film: Julie Angel, personified by Vanessa Minnillo. She is Johnny Storm’s escort to Reed and Sue’s wedding, the first, unfinished and never seen again. In comics, Julie Angel was never Johnny’s girlfriend, but his girlfriend’s best friend. Let’s look at it together.
Julie Angel was actually born as Juliette D’Angelo and changed her name to the more seductive Julie Angel to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. She may have been the daughter or close relative of Augustus D’Angelo, president of Roxxon Energy Corporation, but whatever their relationship, they rarely, if ever, met. When she moved to New York, Julie found a nice apartment and shared the cost with her friend and roommate Frankie Ray… who was dating Johnny Storm, the famous human torch from Fantastic Four. Julie’s first meeting with Johnny was rather hurried because they only exchanged names before he left, but they got to know each other better after that. Julie’s career is going well, and the second time she meets Johnny Storm is at a concert at the Village Theatre. Julie also had a brilliant idea because the theatre was right next to Mama Leon’s Italian restaurant and many performances were ruined by the strong smell of garlic and sauce that came from the neighbouring building: The girl convinced the producers to give all the restaurant staff free tickets to the show so they could hang out for the opening night. But unfortunately the show was interrupted by a very unexpected failure: Galactus returned to Earth with his new herald, Terrax the Tamer, who prompted the Human Torch and Frankie, who also possessed the power of fire, to intervene. Apparently everything went well, because Earth wasn’t destroyed quickly and Julie went home. The next night, while doing aerobics, Johnny came to visit her: He was desperate and looking for a shoulder to cry on. Frankie left the planet as Nova, the new herald of Galactus, and it broke his heart: It was Julia who comforted him and then called the Fantastic Four, who were worried because they didn’t know where Johnny was. When he left, Julie had enough time to feel shocked and for this unexpected development.
From that moment on, her career also suffered some kind of setback and the next time Julie Angel started performing as a clown in Central Park. There she meets Johnny, who walks around with his friend The Thing, who scares her without knowing. This moment marks the craziest love triangle Julie has ever had in her life: At the time she was in love with Gray Landers, another actor she had met in a drama class; but she was also the ignorant object of Johnny Storm’s attention, who took an interest in her after Frankie’s departure; Johnny, in turn, was the object of desire for Julie’s new neighbor, a fellow actress named Sharon Selleck. When Johnny started taking acting classes with Rolf Brandis to try and get Julie’s attention, Julie took it as a good sign because she wanted to help Sharon win Johnny’s heart. This complex network of romantic ties and interests was fortunately (?) interrupted by an attempted invasion by Annihilus, leader of the Negative Zone, who took control of the Baxter building. As disastrous as it was, Annihilus’ intervention cooled everyone down and after the meeting all the boys and girls became good friends. Julie and Sharon even helped Johnny find a new home because he wanted his own place away from the Baxter building where he lived with the rest of his family. When they found his bachelor home, they even threw a party together and started a new friendship. The following years were as normal as possible: Julie started a love affair with Gray Landers and even followed him to Los Angeles when he received a promising film offer. She kept in touch with the Human Torch and even showed it to Sharon after she panicked and summoned her from her new home in King’s Cross: It turned out she was indeed in danger, threatened by the Scrells. Julie eventually lost her role in the film and found work in magazine distribution. After realizing her dream she returned to New York, where she immediately felt transported to the space adventures of yesteryear: Nova was killed in space, and his mind contacted his old friend, and asked for help to get his body back….
Juliet D’Angelo, or Julie Angel, is a young girl whose goal is to suck the bones of tomorrow’s life.
