WaterTower Music has released the soundtrack to New Line Cinema’s explosive new film, Mortal Kombat, which brings the franchise’s tense action to life in all its violent glory and pits all the fan favorites against each other in an unstoppable, bloody final battle that pushes them to the limit. Mortal Kombat (the film’s soundtrack) features a new score by Golden Globe-, Emmy- and Grammy-nominated composer Benjamin Wallfisch (IT and IT Chapter 2, Shazam, Blade Runner: 2049 [c/ Hans Zimmer]). It contains 24 tracks by Wallfisch, who interpreted the themes of the film and emphasized the harsh, visceral flow of the story in his music.

Director Simon McQuoid discussed working with Wallfisch on the bill:

Ben and I both knew we had to use the classic Techno Syndrome song as the source for all of Mortal Kombat’s music. But at the same time we knew we had to make an updated and improved version of the song. And Ben delivered, of course! I’m very excited about this new version of the song 2021, because the first time I heard it, it blew me away. In fact, Ben blew me away while making this movie. So we can all thank Benjamin Wallfisch for his genius and passion in creating Techno Syndrome 2021.

Wallfish is more detailed:

When I was invited to come on board Mortal Kombat, I was very aware of the responsibility that comes with a franchise so deeply rooted in pop culture and with such a passionate fan base. My first question was what could I do with Techno Syndrome, a piece of music that has so much original game and movie DNA? What motifs could be reinvented and integrated into the score’s symphonic soundscape, and could a complete reinvention of the song as an EDM single be considered in 2021? Thank you to Immortals for allowing us to reinterpret their classic in a way that celebrates the world of Mortal Kombat and its fans, and the exhilarating power of electronic dance music that caused so much controversy 30 years ago.

I have rarely experienced such a turn of events as Mortal Kombat. Being barely familiar with the video game series (and at one point trying not to play it so well), I was initially torn and could not emotionally relate to the idea of the film at all. But then the trailer came out and I was intrigued. Then there was the opportunity to listen to the soundtrack before its release on the 23rd. April…

And I think my brain exploded.

I may have a bad habit of using superlatives too often in my reviews, but believe me when I say that Benjamin Wallfish’s score for Mortal Kombat is one of the best I’ve ever heard. It’s not just an action movie soundtrack, it’s a whole world realized through sound and melody, and I’m there every minute. With the music in the fight scenes (it’s not hard to tell which), you feel every punch and attack with brutal clarity. As for the music alone, I can’t wait to see these fight scenes in context, because I need to know how this music relates to the action. And it’s such a beautiful music, it has what I like to call height, that is, it expands and creates the illusion of space as it goes on. You can literally hear the music growing and floating at times, which helps to create an idea of the world that exists in the music.

But like I said, this soundtrack doesn’t limit itself to the action. Mr. Wallfisch also demonstrates a great ability to take the music in the opposite direction, slowing it down and allowing the audience to breathe collectively. This is important for any film: If the soundtrack is just GO GO GO all the time, it can start to pinch your ears and become quite irritating. But the music of Mortal Kombat is not like that at all (much to my surprise). There’s a lot of action, but there are also many moments of relative silence and calm, although it’s usually the kind of silence that is the calm before the storm. There is a great balance between the two extremes of noise and silence, and I love it all.

Another detail I like about this soundtrack? The title list doesn’t tell us much about plot details. If I read the tracklist correctly, most of these tracks seem to be character-specific themes, which is great because I love thematic soundtracks (when they’re done right). Still, there’s little that stands out in terms of plot, and that’s a good thing. I’ve seen too many soundtracks where you can already guess the plot of a movie from the titles, but that’s not the case here.

I could go on and on about Mortal Kombat’s music, but I’ll close by saying that listening to this soundtrack is at the top of my 2021 to-do list (and six months ago I never thought I’d say that). If you get a chance, you must listen to this soundtrack, regardless of the movie itself, it’s that good.
