This is one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. It’s also one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s so good that it’s going to make you want to keep watching it to see how it ends, which is great because the movie doesn’t end, it just doesn’t end. It leaves us with a cliffhanger, which actually is a good thing because it’s the kind of ending to not have it be a complete closure. If you haven’t seen it, I suggest watching this movie right away.

There have been a lot of reviews on the Deep Ones DVD release that I’ve seen on the Internet, so I felt the need to write a review of my own. I am reviewing the Deep Ones (2020) from Sony, starring Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Mark Strong. Notable actors from the 2016 film are also featured in this release, such as Laurence Fishburne and Lupita Nyongo.

The Deep Ones (2020) is a horror movie. It’s a scary movie. It’s a movie people may have a problem with. It’s a movie that, if it wanted to, could probably be described as “Necronomicon” or “The Shining” or even “The Descent” but most people would be hard pressed to tell you what is so scary about it. It’s a movie that, if you haven’t seen it, you probably don’t know what it’s about.. Read more about the deep ones (2020 review) and let us know what you think.

Summary

H.P. Lovecraft’s stories have been adapted over the decades with varying degrees of success, and my favorite remains Stuart Gordon’s Dagon, but The Deep Ones isn’t bad either and is on the same shelf.

Plot:

A couple rents a house by the sea and discovers that their unusual neighbors are part of an ancient cult.

Review:

Alex (Gina La Piana) and her husband Petri (Johann Urb) go to the coast and rent a luxurious house on a cliff. Before moving in, they are warmly introduced to the neighborhood by their hosts, Russell (Robert Miano) and Ingrid (Sylvia Spross) Marsh, who is pregnant. Immediately, it is clear to the viewer (but not to the characters) that something is wrong: The swamp is planning something sinister. The next morning, they show up to make breakfast for them (the secret ingredient in the eggs is a sea creature chopped into pieces), and Petrie falls for it almost immediately. When Alex looks away, Ingrid’s pregnant belly releases a slimy tentacle, which is then shoved into Petri’s mouth (yikes) and he officially becomes a member of the cult. He sees visions of Cthulhu and nefarious rituals, but now he’s involved. Soon Alex notices that something is wrong: A strange woman (played by Kelly Maroney) posts notices of missing persons near the house, and an unusual sheriff comes by to greet her in the neighborhood. Alex is then visited by a very strange doctor (Timothy Mascatelle, who appears to be playing a woman) who wants to take samples of Alex’s bodily fluids to make sure she is healthy. When Alex and Petri are invited to a neighborhood party, it quickly becomes clear that the neighbors are a cult that wants to usher in a new era where Ktulu or other fish-like creatures will rule the world, but first they have to cast a spell on Alex… or take her by force.

H.P. Lovecraft’s stories have been adapted over the decades with varying degrees of success, and my favorite remains Stuart Gordon’s Dagon, but The Deep Ones isn’t bad either and is on the same shelf. Writer/director Chad Ferrin’s film has some strange and uncomfortable qualities that make it achieve a certain status that horror fans will appreciate, and it’s surprising how effective it is when it wasn’t on my radar at all before it was released on DVD this month by 123 Go Entertainment. It contains a healthy dose of Lovecraftian oddities, including a surprising amount of sex, nudity, and rape of creatures by humans, which is rare in movies these days. I’m not saying I like it, but for a movie where the impregnation of a creature by a human is an integral part of the plot, this movie has it in abundance! Sometimes it goes too far (especially in the late night scene, which was totally inappropriate), but if you like Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna’s films from the 80s and 90s, The Deep Ones hits the nail on the head.

The DVD includes deleted scenes, a short film and a behind-the-scenes video.

“The Deep Ones” (2020) is a supernatural thriller that follows the struggle between the underwater city of Atlantean Triton and the surface-dwelling human race. As recently as the year 2000, the aquatic “lost continent” of Atlantis was the scene of a tragic and cataclysmic war. The humans won that war, and now they are ready to expand, and start colonizing the seas, once more. But there is a problem….
