The Marvel Cinematic Universe has spent so much time establishing the framework, tone and atmosphere – that make the series what it is – that any minor deviation can be felt as a major breakthrough to new heights. Objective: Ragnarok brought a comedic tone to Thor that was seen as something new and unique. When War of Infinity featured the antagonist more than the previous twenty films, he was praised for being incredibly different. I get the impression this is coming from people who overly praise every little change in the formula, to the point where they’re being congratulated for things that aren’t as revolutionary as fans might think. (I won’t go back and read all the articles, but I’m sure I’m guilty of that). And that doesn’t mean these movies are bad, it just means that the MCU has a consistent feel and that these movies are still part of the obvious part of the franchise.
Speaking of which, WandaVision really does look like something else. The first three episodes use the style and look of several sitcoms to tell a story that resembles a Twilight Zone-like horror story set in a small town where something is clearly wrong. It is a familiar and comfortable place, but at the same time very frightening and disturbing. And of course, the Westview series is just a series within a series – and we sometimes go from the awkwardness of Westview and Wandavision to the relative comfort of the regular MCU, but the series still gives us a chance to do something different.
And at this point, it really feels like the show is trying to do something different. Until now, it has not been about saving the world, or saving the country, but saving a city. And that threat wasn’t a peaceful one, it was Wanda’s powers getting a little out of control. Viewers are supposed to read about this situation while Wanda creates a sitcom series to resurrect her dead lover and give him a happy and perfect life – basically a sitcom series. It’s a story about grief and trauma – yes, some MCU films have lofty themes like Guardians Vol. 2 and its complex reflections on fatherhood – but WandaVision is a film where the superhero elements of the comics feel like they’ve been relegated to the background in relation to the character and theme.
And she’s been developing characters and exploring the depth of this notion for quite some time – but in episode seven, Agnes, one of the characters around, was actually named Agatha Harkness, who is some kind of witch, probably with powers similar to Wanda’s. Agatha appears to be the cause of Wanda’s misfortunes during the series.
She killed Sparky, and it’s crazy….
Part of me is annoyed that it’s not satisfying; even if you’ve already met a character, it’s not satisfying – at least not yet. Who’s Agatha? What’s his relationship with Wanda? What do we care? Until we have answers to these few other questions, we can start worrying about Agatha, but for now, this reveal means nothing in the context of WandaVision or the MCU. There was no indication that Agatha was behind the events. The fact that all the scenes she played in earlier in the series now resonate with examples where she uses her gifts to manipulate a certain situation seems to be an example of the series trying to hold us back where she doesn’t really deserve to.
I’m starting to worry about whether I’m past the MCU, because I feel like the way I want this story to end and the way it ends are two radically different things. If WandaVision is about a traumatized woman with uncontrollable superpowers who uses her powers to create the perfect sitcom life for herself and her dead partner for six-fourths of the episodes, shouldn’t the logical conclusion of these actions be closure? But no, the Scarlet Witch needs a villain to fight against. There should be some kind of confrontation and some kind of new cameo and big explosions.
Maybe I’m wrong and maybe I’m too critical. I’m sure that would be enough, and my ideal scenario is probably too introspective to have much appeal. And who knows, maybe they’ll find a good balance between big explosions, exciting cameos, intense themes and emotional closure.
I’ve been hammering on this post very slowly since watching the seventh episode of WandaVision, but if this continues, the first of the finals will take place in less than 24 hours. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it on some level, but the big reveal of a pure villain seems pointless to me, as does a great new cameo. I think these stories are better when they provide rich themes and develop their characters – better when these stories are really about something.
I know I’ve wasted the last hundred words on rags and MCU themes, but I’m curious who this cameo is – Dr. Strange? Reed Richards? Magneto? Dr. Doom? Baymax? Mephisto? My expectations of him are high.
